We had injuries at the start of the year. We had Blackburn at home in the first game of the season and I dont have a fit striker on the books, Redknapp told talkSPORT.Im looking through the book trying to find somebody and suddenly I said to Tony Adams, What about Kanu?He went Harry, hes 48.

I said, ‘I spoke to the physios at Arsenal and they said hes fit. He was at West Brom last year, I saw him and he did alright. I saw him twice and he played well.’Anyway, we go through the book and cant find anyone and so I ring up Kanu.Kanu, do you want to play? Are you going to play this year?Yeah I would love to play, he said.I said, Do you want to come to Portsmouth?4

So he came down on the Monday morning and I said we can do a deal and have you play.Monday morning he turns up and I said, Look we have a reserve game this afternoon and Im going to play you in the reserves against Cardiff. Its not a trial, its just to make sure your fitness is good and to get you ready for Saturday. We have a big game at Blackburn.Hes having a medical and I said, Dont do the medical until after the game, if hes rubbish we will fail him on the medical.4

Kanu went on to play 165 times for Portsmouth

Anyway, he plays in the game for 60 minutes and scores two worldies so we sign him.On the Saturday we play Blackburn at home first game and I put him on the bench. Todorov plays in the first half, he can only play half a game as he has an injury, we come in 1-0 up and I put Kanu on and he scores two goals in the second half and we win 3-0.On the Monday we go to Middlesbrough and he gets another two goals and we win 4-0 at Middlesbrough. We get back to Southampton airport, we are waiting for the luggage and suddenly his body has gone into spasm and he cant move. They have to lift him up, put him in a wheelchair and wheel him out to his car. The kitman had to drive him home.Five years later and hes still playing for Portsmouth. He scored the goal in the semi-final and scored the only goal in the final to win the cup.Kanu went on to play 165 games for Portsmouth before retiring in 2012 and helped them to lift the FA Cup in 2008.
