Chelsea’s first test of the new year sees Southampton at Stamford Bridge, with the Saints also hoping 2019 brings good fortune for the remainder of their season.Maurizio Sarri will be pleased with his side’s form at the back end of December, but there is no doubt the Italian has been reliant on Eden Hazard to drag them over the line at times.4

Eden Hazard is Chelsea’s top scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions.

In the opposing dugout, Ralph Hasenhuttl is a man with a very transparent motive, already making a big impact in his new role as Southampton manager. In only his second game in charge, the Austrian oversaw an impressive 3-2 victory against Arsenal at St Mary’s.However, they are now without a win in two games, and sit on 15 points, level with Burnley who occupy the last relegation spot as it stands.4

Southampton were humbled 3-1 at home to Manchester City last time out.

Although the odds look firmly stacked against Hasenhuttl to make an impact on Wednesday’s fixture at the Bridge – Southampton have only won three of their last 19 visits there, the last a 3-1 victory in 2015.Olivier Giroud, who enjoys playing against the Saints, is likely to miss out through injury. The striker has been directly involved in six goals in his last five appearances against them. He is the latest of an ever expanding list of injury woe’s for Sarri that includes Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi.Southampton captain Ryan Bertrand, formerly of Chelsea, is nearing a return to full fitness but the game against his former club may come just a little to early in his recovery.

But it is crucial to have continuity.”When asked about their injury list the Chelsea manager appeared distressed as they proceed into a busy January.“We are in trouble because in January we have to play every three days.”New Chelsea signing Christian Pulisic will not be joining up with the squad until the end of the season, with the decision being made to loan him back to German side Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the campaign.4

USA international Pulisic joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund for a reported 58 million.

Ralph Hasenhuttl (Southampton):“Hopefully we make a surprising result, we did it against Arsenal and we can do it against Chelsea.“The mentality and character of the team is okay. They believe in their qualities and we can do it better than we did.”Hasenhuttl on Chelsea injuries:“It’s always a good opportunity if there are injured or suspended players, as we have a lot of fresh players we can bring into the game again.“We had Ings, Redmond, Armstrong and also the two centre-backs Yoshida and Vestergaard.”4

Hasenhuttl will be without Pierre- Emile Hojbjerg through suspension, the Dane scored and then was later sent off against City.
