Adrian Durham on talkSPORT warns Tottenham fans not to mistake beating Chelsea for improvement
Adrian Durham has warned Tottenham he still does not see any improvement in their side, despite ending Chelsea’s unbeaten run in style. The Drivetime host admitted he was impressed with the way the clubdismantled Maurizio Sarri’s men at Wembley, but was not surprised by the result.Son was among the scorers for Spurs on Saturday3
Son was among the scorers for Spurs on Saturday
Goals from Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Hueng-Min Son meant Olivier Giroud’s effort was no more than a consolation as they condemned the Blues to their first Premier League defeat of the season in a 3-1 loss. However, Durham was bullish as ever when asked by Drivetime co-host Matt Holland if he had seen sufficient improvement from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.“Spurs beating Chelsea is a nice win, it’s something nice” he stated on Monday.“It’s lovely; there was great football, we’re all big admirers of Harry Kane and I’ve got nothing negative ever to say about Christian Eriksen. There’s lots to admire about Spurs and Pochettino. It’s a nice win – celebrate it, enjoy it!Pochettino is trying to build a Premier League winning side in north London3
Pochettino is trying to build a Premier League winning side in north London
“But don’t mistake it for improvement. That’s the key here.“Now Spurs have beaten Chelsea in four of the last five seasons. Let’s make it clear, this isn’t a new thing. They’ve not just broken some king of deadlock, they’ve enjoyed better ins than the one on Saturday; the 5-3 New Year’s Day in 2015 was my personal favourite, I don’t think anybody expected Spurs to win. I don’t think ANYBODY expected Spurs to score five – it was an incredible victory.“Two seasons ago was probably the most impressive – Dele Alli got a couple of goals, they beat Chelsea 2-0 and it ended Chelsea’s 13-game winning run. Chelsea were going for the record that night actually and they went on to win the title that season.“So on Saturday, we have to bear in mind as well that [David] Luiz was at his very worst – it was Luiz from the World Cup semi-final of 2014 – Jorginho is slower than the Moose leaving a cake shop, Kepa the keeper is 70million and couldn’t be bothered to dive for Kane’s goal.Luiz was thoroughly humbled against Germany in 2014, much the same way as he was on Saturday3
Luiz was thoroughly humbled against Germany in 2014, much the same way as he was on Saturday
“So Chelsea just weren’t at it at all, the manager made some bizarre decisions and it’s very strange this [N’Golo] Kante, Jorginho thing.“So there’s a lot of stuff going on with Chelsea; yeah they’re unbeaten but a bit fortunate to be unbeaten. Spurs played well, but I say so what?“We all know Chelsea weren’t as good as their unbeaten start suggested, we all knew Spurs could beat Chelsea – nothing is different.“They’ve got one of the best keepers in the world, one of the best strikers in the world, one of the best No.10s in the world. They needed to add two, maybe three, top-drawer players in the summer to improve and didn’t do that. “That’s one of the key problems for them, that’s why they look like they’re going to go out of the Champions League early.“Just to sum up, it’s an expected win for Tottenham, it’s not a sign of greatness, it’s no amazing new milestone.“It’s just Spurs beating Chelsea.”

Arsenal vs Manchester United in 1999: What if Dennis Bergkamp scored that penalty in FA Cup semi-final replay?
talkSPORT.com looks at key moments in football history, where events could so easily have taken a different course and asks, what if?It has been 20 years since Arsenal and Manchester United‘s thrilling FA Cup match. It was a game that had everything from red cards, glorious goals and here, talkSPORT.com ponders what if Dennis Bergkamp scored THAT penalty in the dying moments?

What happened?

United and Arsenal were battling on all fronts domestically in the 1998/99 season. The former were on the verge of sealing the treble, but the latter were looking to win a second successive League and Cup double. The rivals, and hands down the two best teams in the land, were evenly matched throughout the campaign, but in the end United pipped the Gunners to the Premier League crown by a point on the final day of the season and dumped them out of the FA Cup in the semi-final in the process. That league campaign was breathtaking and is perhaps forgotten about due to Man United’s clean sweep on the trophy front.Arsenal, with Patrick Vieira, Tony Adams, Nicolas Anelka and Bergkamp were a well-balanced side blessed with flair, toughness and a very mean defence. Between January and May the back four conceded just six goals.Only one team could halt their quest for total domination again and in the semi-final replay at Villa Park on 14 April, Arsenal were beaten in extra-time thanks to a memorable Ryan Giggs goal. But before that there were90 minutes of pure drama.David Beckham and Bergkampscored two great goals, Roy Keane was sent off with around 15 minutes remaining and, asfull-time edged closer and people anxiously checked their watches, Ray Parlour was brought down by an exhausted Phil Neville in the 18-yard box.Penalty to Arsenal.I would have had my house on Dennis Bergkamp scoring the penalty, Parlour later said.“I remember asking the referee David Elleray how long was left and he said, This is the last kick of the game. It was Dennis versus Schmeichel and he saved it.”Cue euphoria from United.Schmeichel celebrating Manchester United’s win at Villa Park in 19994

But what if he didnt miss?

Well,Giggswould not have scored his wonder goal andArsenalwould have contested the FA Cup final against Newcastle instead.United’s treble dream would have been over, muchto the delight of Liverpool fans; the Reds having celebrated their own treble success – First Division, European Cup and League Cup – 15 years earlier. It wasneck-and-neck in the title race at the time – a point separated them – anda win could well have provided Arsenal with the boost needed to win the league instead. “If Bergkamp had have scored, they’d have won the double. That’s just how small the margins are, and I think that’s the standout for me,” current United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.In the penultimate games of the Premier League season, United drew withBlackburn and Arsenal lostat Leeds.“Nigel Winterburn was kicked off and [Jimmy Floyd] Hasselbaink scored at the far post and [Kaba] Diawara hit the bar twice,” Arsene Wenger said of the Leeds defeat.“After that [United] won the Champions League final in the last minutes – it was a miracle year for them, he added.Sir Alex Ferguson claimedhis players “played in agony to get the victory” at Villa Park following Keane’s red card. A week later, on the back of this momentum, the clubfought back from 2-0 down to beat Juventus and set upthe Champions League final against Bayern Munich.Beckham is carried off the pitch at Villa Park following the semi-final4

Certainly, there is a belief among Gooners that beating Unitedwould have broken them mentally and stopped them from becoming English champions at the very least.Giggs goal is what decided their season, Wenger said, believingthe win gave his rivals the edge in the title race.I can still hear the shouts of their team having won, he said of the FA Cup clash. They couldnt believe it because they were down to 10 men. And I think that put them on a wave of euphoria and then they won the title – just.Once again, its all subjective because no one can say what would have really happened, so we’ll just end with this fromFergie: That [FA Cup] game had everything, absolutely everything.Giggs scored one of the greatest goals of his career in the game4
