Manchester United transfer news: Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho wants move to Old Trafford
Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho could be on his way to Manchester United this summer from Barcelona. The Brazilian playmaker, 26, swapped Merseyside for Catalonia in January 2018, but the move has not worked out.Philippe Coutinho is praying for a return to the Premier League4

Now, according to the Mirror, Coutinho has informed a number of Spanish players in the United squad that he wants to resurrect his career in Manchester with a 100million deal mooted.Since joining Barcelona fourteen months ago, Coutinho has played 60 games and scored 18 goals – not a bad return for a midfielder. However, most of his contributions came during a run of good form towards the end of last season, whereas he has struggled recently – only completing 90 minutes twice since October, and receiving jeers from his own fans against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. The potential deal will leave Liverpool fans furious.Nicknamed ‘The Magician’ by Kopites, Coutinho arrived on Merseyside in 2013 for 8.5million and left five years later for 142 million – the third most expensive transfer of all time. Some Liverpool fans may hope that their club look to re-sign Coutinho such was his exalted status in England. However, a move back to Anfield looks unlikely due to the club’s strained relationship with the player; Coutinho reportedly refused to train with teammates in the summer of 2017 following interest from Barca, and handed in a transfer request later in the season in order to force the move through.Furthermore, Liverpool and Barcelona are reported to be on uneasy terms after the Merseyside club insisted as part of Coutinho’s transfer that Barca pay a premium on any future players they sign from Liverpool. The Camp Nou club have now poached a number of Liverpool stars including Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez and, of course, Coutinho.Coutinho dinks a beautiful chip over United’s David De Gea in the Europa League Round of 164

A spanner in the works for United could be interest from their recent Champions League victims Paris Saint-Germain.The French champions were eager to sign Coutinho before his move to Spain, and are reportedly desperate to bolster their midfield after missing out on Ajax starlet Frankie de Jong. So, they may be in a position to exact some revenge for their humiliating exit from Europe last week.Manchester United became the first team in Champions League history to recover from a 0-2 home loss in the first leg4

The Champions League victory in Paris means United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to land the permanent job in the summer. He has indicated that the squad needs tweaking for United to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City, and perhaps Coutinho could be the signing to bring about that transition. The Norwegian said: “We need more time to be challenging but thats what this club should be doing. The foundation is here.We just need to add a few attributes to the squad like what we saw against Paris Saint-Germain.United have set a club record 9 consecutive away wins in all competitions, and have won more points than anyone else in the Premier League since Solskjaer took over4

Theyve got to improve all the time because thats what the best teams in the league do.There definitely is a gap now. There is a top two and then were in the next four. Weve got to close that gap.I dont know how many points we are behind them because I dont look at that. But we have to do things step by step because you cant close it in one big go. Weve got to keep looking at it.
