Bayern are arguably the favourites to go through as they are at home and managed to prevent Liverpool from taking a lead into the second leg.However, superstitious Liverpool supporters might point out to the last time the two sides faced each other in the competition.They met in the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1981 and after drawing 0-0 at Anfield in the first leg, Liverpool made it through on away goals – securing a 1-1 draw in Munich before going on to win the competition.2

But if you look even further back, you’ll see that a 0-0 draw at Anfield in a cup tie against Bayern does not always work in the English side’s favour.The two teams met in the European Cup Winners Cup in 1971 and the first leg at Liverpool’s home duly finished goalless.Bayern came out on top in the second leg though, winning 3-1 and dumping Bill Shankly’s Reds out of the competition.It’s going to be a nervy 90 minutes for both sets of supporters that’s for sure!
