A Julian Dicks penalty capped a comeback from 2-0 down and I was in the upper tier of the Centenary Stand (latterly the Trevor Brooking stand) and had a great view of Dicks’ penalty. It’s shame the old stadium is now rubble and turning into flats.”

“My ears are still ringing from the deafening cacophony of the thousands upon thousands of Peruvian fans who had travelled across the globe to see their nation compete in their first World Cup for 36 years. There were tears all around during the national anthem amid stories of fans selling their cars and quitting their jobs to be there. Sadly they did not get the result their support deserved [Denmark won 1-0] but the memory of being in that amazing stadium in one of Russia’s more provincial tournament towns will stay with me forever.”

I went on to cover their wins over Italy on a golden goal and Spain on penalties before Germany stopped them in the semi-finals.“An incredible time to be in a host country for a World Cup.”
