Joey Barton on Jordan Pickford: Footballers must live like monks these days, I wish I did
Joey Barton insists footballers must live like monks after footage emerged of a pub fight allegedly involving Jordan Pickford.Police are investigating a video which appears to show the Everton goalkeeper involved in the brawl outside a Sunderland pub.Fleetwood manager Barton, who was arrested in 2007 following a similar incident in Liverpool, expressed sympathy for the England shot-stopper and argued its not easy to stay out of trouble. However, Barton believes footballers are paid well enough to sacrifice a normal social life, and certainly wishes he did so during his playing career.Pickford appeared to lash out in the brawl1

The former Manchester City midfielder told talkSPORT: As sad as it is, you have to live as a monk. Its not easy wanting to be a normal lad and go out for a pint, you just cant do that as a modern day footballer now.Youve got to be really careful where you go. Otherwise trouble will find you. Dont forget, footballers are big strong lads, theyre not snowflakes. When you havent got a drink in you, its dead easy to walk away and think Im not going to put myself in that situation. As a footballer, you should know better, it cost me many times in my career and I just had to accept in the end that there are some things you cant do as a player.Everyones got a camera on their mobile phone and you cant have the lifestyle you want to have.

Its not easy being a footballer, but we are paid fantastically well to do that. I shouldve lived my life in a more monk-like fashion.Thats the advice Barton will be passing onto his Fleetwood players, who he hopes can learn from his previous misdemeanours. He added: As a manager, Id love to know that all of my players were tucked up with a hot chocolate on Saturday night watching Match of the Day.
