Danny Murphy believes Wayne Rooneys arrest emphasises the issues facing footballers at the tail-end of their playing careers.Englands record goalscorer was taken into custody last month for public intoxication following an incident at an airport in Virginia.Rooney, 33, paid a small fine and claimed the arrest was the result of feeling disorientated after combining sleeping tablets with alcohol.However, Murphy points out this isn’t the striker’s first alcohol-related scandal.2

I think the reason it is on the front page is because of who it is and because, with Wayne, theres been a catalogue of events which are generally linked to alcohol.I think sometimes we look at stories and think theres someone behaving badly, but if you take away that structure of 20 years being told what to wear, what to eat, where to be the football keeps you alive.When youre playing football the biggest problem is when youre not playing, youre out of the team, or youre injured.

He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanour charge, the spokesman said.2
