Manager Jurgen Klopp is pleased with the way his side moved on from the Coutinho furore with very little fuss.“Yes, we miss Phil Coutinho a lot because he is a world-class player and I loved working with him,” said the Reds boss.“But we had to deal without him and we did well. Mane was asked by Spanish journalists about a potential move to LaLiga, having been linked with Barca’s arch-rivals Real Madrid in recent months.“Very good question! You guys write it…” was the response.“I respect LaLiga is a good league, they have great players, but the Premier League is also a wonderful league and every single player would want to play there.“So I have a chance to play there and I am very happy, so that’s cool.” But Spanish football has already left a lasting impression on Mane, and one former Barcelona player in particular.“Ronaldinho was one of my heroes. I really loved watching him play, especially here at Camp Nou,” he said.“I would have loved to play against him. Him not being here now is an advantage for us! I still love him. He is still my hero forever.“I loved his skills, his smile for sure. Maybe when I’m not smiling on the pitch people think I am angry. I would love to have his smile, but we’re not similar like that.”

However, a league title in England has so far eluded the Frenchman who failed to win one in his six years with the Gunners, and it is domestic glory he prioritises – even more so than the Champions League.“I prefer to be at a big club rather than playing every week in a less prestigious team and I still have targets,” Giroud said to The Guardian. “To win a Premier League is my last dream as a footballer, maybe more than winning a Champions League, because I know how tough it is to win this league.“I have team-mates here who have won it, so I’m a bit jealous. Barcelona 2-0 Atletico Madrid: Diego Costa sent off in moment of madness after squaring up to referee
Diego Costa was sent off for a moment of madness which allowed Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi to propel Barcelona to victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.Atletico battled superbly after Diego Costa’s mindless 28th minute red card, but were finally prised open with six minutes left as Barca move 11 points clear at the top of LaLiga. It appeared as though Costa was sent off for whatever he said to the official4
It appeared as though Costa was sent off for whatever he said to the official
For the opening 28 minutes the game was a joy to watch with both sides committed to attacking.Barca were on the front foot in the opening stages, though they had to wait until the 14th minute for their first clear sight of goal.It was a fine chance when it came, with Jordi Alba striking the left upright after latching on to Lionel Messi’s lofted pass.Atletico were pushing forward themselves but leaving gaps for Barca to try to exploit on the counter. After being red carded Costa took his time leaving the pitch4
After being red carded Costa took his time leaving the pitch
Suarez had a half-chance in the 19th minute when the ball rebounded off Diego Godin and sat up, but the Uruguayan fired over.At the other end, Antoine Griezmann hit a shot straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the angle tightened.Messi sent a free-kick narrowly over before Jan Oblak denied Philippe Coutinho, who shot too close to the goalkeeper after being played in by Suarez.Thirty seconds later, the game changed entirely as Costa lost it, squaring up to the referee and earning a straight red card.Atletico were still trying to reorganise when a poor back pass from Godin almost played in Suarez but he could not capitalise from a tight angle.Atletico dropped back into their shell as what had been an open game became much tighter. Barca were limited to half-chances for Messi and Coutinho before the break, but neither had the beating of Oblak. The second half was slow to get going but in the 55th minute, Messi spun away from Koke and got his shot away, but again Oblak gathered comfortably.Just after the hour, Barca’s talisman went on a long run before laying the ball off to Suarez, but his shot did not have the power to beat the goalkeeper.Luis Suarez ultimately got the breakthrough4

Messi then tried to bend a shot beyond Oblak, who parried the shot before his momentum took him beyond the ball, but he recovered before Coutinho could latch onto it.Atletico got a rare second-half chance when Gerard Pique was punished for a push on Angel Correa but Griezmann’s free-kick was comfortably gathered by Ter Stegen.Barca continued to build pressure at the other end, where Oblak had to make a double save, first parrying Suarez’s shot and then keeping out an effort on the rebound from substitute Malcom.A set-piece gave Atletico another opportunity in the 74th minute but Rodrigo headed Griezmann’s cross over when Jose Gimenez looked better placed.Lionel Messi quickly doubled Atletico’s misery4
Lionel Messi quickly doubled Atletico’s misery
But just as it appeared Atletico were going to take a hard-earned point, Suarez struck a sublime shot to finally beat Oblak with six minutes left.Picking the ball up just outside the area, Suarez spun away from Thomas and bent a shot beyond the outstretched arm of Oblak and in off the post.In his wild celebrations, Suarez earned a yellow card for taking off his shirt, meaning he will miss the next match.Atletico were still reeling from that goal when Messi made it 2-0 with a typical jinking run and low shot which left Oblak wrong-footed.

Marco Silva hinted he was disappointed at the lack of credit Everton received after last weekend’s remarkable 4-0 rout of Manchester United. The Toffees followed up wins over Chelsea and Arsenal in recent weeks by dismantling United at Goodison Park, but much of the fallout centred on the shortcomings of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.Solskjaer’s side put in their most embarrassing performance since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement at Goodison ParkGetty1
Solskjaer’s side put in their most embarrassing performance since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement at Goodison Park
Silva was typically phlegmatic when asked whether he felt Everton’s achievement had been glossed over but said: “It is up to you [the media] to give the right credit and to look for both teams, not just for one.“But I cannot change anything, it’s not my job.“What I can tell you and it is easy for me to understand is when we didn’t achieve the good results, it’s because it’s our fault. Maybe when we achieve good results it’s because it’s the fault of the others.“You analyse the game, I do my job and analyse the game with my players. When things are going wrong I’m the first one to take responsibility and when we achieve good results it’s up to us to analyse the game.“I don’t know if [the win over United] was the best [performance of the season] or not, it was one of the best. “We did really well, we performed well, we were clinical and assertive in the last third and in important moments of the match.”Richarlison started the rout last Sunday with a magnificent acrobatic overhead kick but was later withdrawn, clutching his left side as he went off minutes after half-time.Silva revealed the Brazil forward is a ‘major doubt’ to face Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon while Theo Walcott, the Brazilian striker’s replacement against United and who completed the scoring, is struggling with sickness. However, Lucas Digne, another on the scoresheet last weekend, has recovered from a knock he suffered which forced his late withdrawal while Yerry Mina has resumed full training.
